London - Santander - Portsmouth July 2010
Following on from our resounding success in 2008, when musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats raising almost £14,000 for charity, this year our adventure will take us to the distant shores of Spain & France. We begin with a ride from London to Portsmouth, a night on the ferry to Santander then the main part of the ride from Santander, up the coast of France and back to Portsmouth via the ferry from St. Malo. This will take 10 days of hard riding and cover a distance of over 1,200km. Our aim is to raise upwards of £15,000 to be split equally between Macmillan Cancer Support, in memory of our colleague Sophie Parr, and the RPO Sickness and Benevolent Fund, the charity that takes care of our musicians in times of need.
Sophie worked with great flair as the RPO's Tours Assistant for two years. A dear friend and colleague, Sophie shockingly passed away before Christmas last year at the tender age of 24 after a brief but valiant fight against cancer. Sophie drew strength from the support she was offered by Macmillan during her battle with cancer and we want to enable Macmillan to reach other people needing help and support. She is sorely missed and it is to her adventurous spirit that we dedicate this exciting journey. The RPO Sickness and Benevolent Fund looks after past and present members of the RPO and their families in times of hardship. |
